Book Review – Powerless

Powerless lives up to the hype. It showed me how ordinary people can be badass and kick some ass, too.

Book with shadows

Every girl deserves something equally as pretty and deadly as they are.”

–Lauren Roberts

What Is It About?

She is the very thing he’s spent his whole life hunting.

He is the very thing she’s spent her whole life pretending to be.

Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya—the exceptional, the empowered, the Elites.

The powers these Elites have possessed for decades were graciously gifted to them by the Plague, though not all were fortunate enough to both survive the sickness and reap the reward. Those born Ordinary are just that—ordinary. And when the king decreed that all Ordinaries be banished in order to preserve his Elite society, lacking an ability suddenly became a crime—making Paedyn Gray a felon by fate and a thief by necessity.

Surviving in the slums as an Ordinary is no simple task, and Paedyn knows this better than most. Having been trained by her father to be overly observant since she was a child, Paedyn poses as a Psychic in the crowded city, blending in with the Elites as best she can in order to stay alive and out of trouble. Easier said than done.

When Paeydn unsuspectingly saves one of Ilyas princes, she finds herself thrown into the Purging Trials. The brutal competition exists to showcase the Elites’ powers—the very thing Paedyn lacks. If the Trials and the opponents within them don’t kill her, the prince she’s fighting feelings for certainly will if he discovers what she is—completely Ordinary

My Opinion

5/5⭐

I savored every moment reading this book because I simply didn't want it to end. Geez, what a terrific book! Now, here I am, writing this review at 1 am (because why not), and I can't even manage to write a proper one. This book seriously messed with my feelings—it was just too good.

It was seriously addictive. Every page was perfection. Every word uttered by the characters (especially by a certain dark-haired, gray-eyed character) was absolutely divine. And I can't wrap my head around the fact that I'll have to wait for the next books to be released.

One thing I've learned while reading and writing is that the characters typically make the book, and Powerless reassured me of that. Paeydn was brave, yet delicate, grappling her fears. And let's not even start with Kai, who had his own inner demons haunting him, yet he gave his best. That man was just TOO GOOD. Everything he said made me giddy and fall harder for him. Kai effortlessly secured a spot in my top five book boyfriends.

Powerless lives up to the hype. It showed me how ordinary people can be badass and kick some ass, too. How, even when we feel like ordinary folks with nothing special, we have so much more to offer.

How many times we have felt like that? How often have we felt powerless in a society where others seem to have greater possibilities? How many times have we forgotten our skills and abilities because of the constant pressure to be more, to have more, and to compete with others?

I can't believe it took me so long to read Powerless, but I'm thrilled I finally did! To anyone craving a dose of enemies-to-lovers, dual POV, sassy characters, melt-in-your-mouth banter, or who has ever felt powerless or ordinary, I highly recommend you read this book. Sometimes, we just need a reminder of what we are truly capable of.

What's one of the most addictive books you've ever read?
